The use of propane requires a portable tank be hooked up to the barbecue and the tank must be filled on a periodic basis. It
is important to monitor the level of propane left in your tank so that you don't run out of fuel in the middle of the cooking process. Propane tanks remain fairly mobile. In many parts of the country driveway barbecue parties are a popular
way of getting together with you neighbors and the use of propane allows you to move the barbecue around.
Natural gas, on the other hand, is a fuel that must be provided by your local utility and must be available at your location.
The use of natural gas does somewhat limit your mobility, but the benefits outweigh this limitation. Natural gas is very convenient, plus you don't run the risk of running out of fuel in the middle of your food preparation.
Some gas grills are coming out with “field conversions". This is a more of a convenience to consumers who purchase one type of grill available in one type of gas, but hope that later they can switch. When the other type of gas does become available, then the manufacturer can offer the conversion kit.
